Western Mindanao command chief, Lt. Gen Benjamin Dolorfino was invited as the guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Basilan during its meeting held last August 03, 2010 at Twins JJ Restaurant, Isabela City, Basilan. He was introduced by Vice Governor Al-Rasheed Sakkalahul, the Rotary Club Basilan immediate past president for 2010.

In his speech, Lt. Gen. Dolorfino from the military point of view, describe our society in relation to promote its peace and development as a task “Trinity” which involves the participation of the government, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the people. The role of the AFP he pointed out, is to protect the people, uphold the sovereignty of the state and defend its territorial integrity. The traditional military role is war fighting and to combat internal security problem.

The Wesmin command chief, conceptualized the nature of internal security problem in the like and image of a tree. In the fight against internal security brought about by insurgency, rebellion, terroristic acts and other atrocities, the approach has been focused on cutting or trimming down the twigs and branches of this tree the object of which is to solve this nagging problem.

Apparently, the approach has not been so successful and there must be somewhere, somehow or something wrong. The war in Mindanao has been here for almost three decades, he aptly said. That tree referring to internal security problem continues to grow because the major trunk or main roots have not been cut or eliminated.

In the internal conflict in Mindanao there are dynamics which the 3-star general, not known to all sundry, a licensed commercial pilot, categorized into six parameters, as follows, the military, socio-economic, cultural, environmental and informational.

He stressed that a well-informed citizenry on these dynamics makes the difference and useful citizenry. The different local government units play important role in promoting peace, development and security. The LGU for that matter must link hands of participative governance and serves as the united front in promoting peace and development. Its major role is to provide leadership in orchestrating multi-dimensional programs, projects and activities that would promote peace, development and security to their constituents.

My fellow Rotarians:

There are many service organizations in the world today, but none so old or so successful as Rotary. There are many reasons for that, and Vocational Service is one of them. This year, I wish you to place a special emphasis on Vocational Service, which is sometimes the forgotten Avenue of Service in Rotary.

High ethical standards in business and personal life are still as important today as they were in 1905. Indeed, many of the problems our world is facing today have been caused by the failure to observe such standards in business affairs.

Vocational Service, in Rotary, means that we are committed to honest business and unassailable ethics, and that we are equally committed to using our vocational skills and advantages to help others. The idea is simple enough – but it is unique to Rotary.

Many service organizations are open to anyone who wishes to join. That has never been the case in Rotary. Rotarians only seek out as members those who are qualified – those who have the character, the ability, and the resolve to make a real contribution to their club.

I have long believed that the bedrock of Rotary is our commitment to ethical behavior. It has been putting what’s right above what’s convenient – and Service Above Self – that has made Rotary different from the rest. That is why we must always remember that whatever we do, we are each the public face of Rotary. We are each the standard-bearers of our organization. What one member does, for good or for ill, reflects on all of us.

So much of what we’ve achieved as an organization has come about because of the trust the world has in Rotary and in Rotarians. That trust has been a major part of our success in polio eradication – the fact that we are known in every community, and known to be people of goodwill and good hearts.

If we wish to see our organization grow and prosper, we must keep Vocational Service front and center in our minds and actions. We must seek out skilled and determined men and women of character. We must do what is right, even when it is inconvenient. And we must always, always, put Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of Basilan conducted the "Lapiz Y Papel" project through the distribution of schools supplies to 116 pupils of the Obsequio Elementary School in Isabela City, Basilan. Mr. Victor Oliveros, Principal together with the teachers welcome the Rotary Club of Basilan and extended their deep appreciation and thanks to the club. President Ray Lintag led the distribution of the school supplies in the form of notebooks, papers, pencils, ballpens, plastic bags and some goodies and acknowledge the donor of the project in the person of Mrs. Leticia Barandino and Vicente Barandino. Club members present were PP Dan Cariaga, PP Agnes Yu, Rtn. Danet Manigos, Rtn Bobong Dans and Rtn Tony Lojera.

RC Basilan Gift-Giving to City Inmates

The Rotary Club of Basilan as part of its Christmas Celebration together with BJMP personnel have distributed toiletries and three chessboards to 59 inmates at the Isabela City Jail last December 16, 2008. Past President Dick Brown personally donated the chessboards while the toiletries came from members contributions. Past President Laura Alano, chairman of gift-giving, have initiated the purchase and the packing of the goods.

After the gift-giving activities, the Rotarians proceeded with its weekly meeting at Twin's Ice Cream House and Restaurant.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

As a father of four and grandfather of five, I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the company of children. When raising our own children, my wife, Young, and I worked hard to give them what all children need most: a loving, safe, and stable home. Our children were our first priority, and we made sure that they always had nutritious food, appropriate clothing, quality medical care, and a good education. We knew very well how fortunate we were to be able to do this. We were grateful that we never had to say to our children, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing to eat tonight,” or “I’m sorry, but we can’t pay your school fees.”

When I was a child, Korea was a poor country, and there were many children who went to bed hungry at night and had no school to go to in the morning. As a Rotarian, I know only too well that there are still far too many children in the world without the absolute essentials: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. And as a Rotarian who is also a father, I consider all of the world’s children to be my responsibility.

When I see my own grandchildren – happy, healthy, and enrolled in good schools – I cannot help but think of the millions of children who do not have so many advantages. I think of the children who have too little to eat and only dirty water to drink. I think of the children who are sick with diseases that could have been prevented and those who will have nowhere safe to sleep tonight. And I think of the children, millions of them every year, who won’t live to see their fifth birthday.

December is Family Month. It is a time to focus on our families, to involve them in our Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need. Because there are so many families and so many children waiting for our help, we, as Rotarians, cannot look away. We cannot and will not rest until all children, everywhere, have the chance for a long and healthy life. We will not rest until we Make Dreams Real for every child in every home where there is hunger, sickness, and want. As Rotarians, we can do no less.

The Rotary Club of Basilan celebrated The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Month by inviting DGN James “Mcgyver” Makasiar as Guest of Honor to its regular weekly meeting held last November 25, 2008 at the JJ Twins Pavillion, Isabela City. The Programme was highlighted with the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow Certificate and Medal to PP Danilo “Dan” Bucoy and pinning of the PHF Sustaining Members to President Ray Lintag, Rtn. James Buckly, PP Dodie Bucoy, PP Dave Pamaran and Rtn Bobong Yu. Induction ceremonies were also conducted to two new members in the persons of Arnulfo Dans and Antonio Lojera. Total numbers of Rotatians has now reached 24.

RC Basilan conducts Dental Mission Project

The Rotary Club of Basilan has conducted a Dental Mission Project at the Basilan National High School, Isabela City last November 18-19, 2008 in connection with the celebration of The Rotary Foundation Month. A total of 118 students has availed of the free dental tooth extraction. Two government dentist in the persons of Dr. Jojo Porras of the Isabela City Government and Dr. Sitti Aisa Alpha, Regional Dentist Supervisor of the DepEd Regional Office 9 has assisted the activity. Mrs. Fe Paras, school nurse of the school, had expected a huge number of students as these were one of the primary health concerns of students reported in her clinic. Main benefactor of this project is Mr. and Mrs. Peter Behringer. This project was also made possible through the generous assistance of Mrs. Marilyn Ceniza-Estur, The BNHS Interact Club, The BNHS Batch ’79, City Government of Isabela, through the Hon. Mayor Cherrylyn Santos-Akbar, and the 1st Marine Brigade. President Ray Lintag has expressed his elation over the successful conduct of the dental mission and extended his heartfelt gratitude to Mr Isa Ibrahim, Principal of the BHNS for his support, the members of the Rotary Club of Basilan, and all those who made this project possible.From left: Pres. Vocational Service

One of the ideals of Vocational Service is the recognition of the worthiness to society of all useful occupation, not just one's own or those pursued by Rotarians.

UNSUNG HEROES

A day in a life of a Day Care Center teacher starts with her own family. She does her household chores, tends to her school-aged children and gives time to her other children, and perhaps too—to her spouse.

The teacher then proceeds to her other wards in the Brgy. Day Care Center where for 2 hours in the morning and another 2 hours in theafternoon, holds classes for children left by their parents. Sometimes, the teacher would fetch those children who are frequently absent from their homes.

In spite of the measly salary of P3,000.00 a month the teacher stays on, truly dedicated in her calling, in her vocation.

WASTE PICKERS & RECYCLERS

Waste reclaiming is a source of income especially for those who live at dumpsites. Everywhere, especially in the cities, dumpsites abound. Unmindful of filth and diseases the waste pickers trudge on, picking and sorting recyclable materials. As an alternative livelihood these waste pickers also help our environment. Non-biodegradable materials are cleaned and sold to recyclers. One such recycling organization is the Calajunan-So-oc-Navais Association (CSN). A short profile of CSN is included in this issue.

For this year, the District is recognizing the vocation of Day Care teachers, the waste pickers and the recyclers (our Discon 2009 kit comes with an all-purpose pouch made of recycled materials – doypacks of juice, tomato and spaghetti sauces – sourced from CSN). These are the people for whom many of us take for granted. But without their care and dedication, our world would indeed be a poorer place.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

It sounds so simple, yet it means so much.

It means so much to every one of the people touched by Foundation-supported programs every year – the children too poor to go to school, the families who have lost everything in a disaster, the communities that lack sanitation, clean water, and medical care.

It means so much to the two billion children now living lives free from polio. Because of the work that the Foundation has helped support, five million cases of paralysis and more than 250,000 deaths from polio have been prevented.

Today, we are in what we hope will be the last stages of the fight against polio. All of you have helped through your support of our Foundation. Through the Foundation, we are able to be part of the day-to-day work of polio eradication by helping supply the transportation, the fliers, the advertisements, and even the lollipops to ensure we reach all children with the essential oral polio vaccine and make each round of immunization a success.

Those of you who have participated in a National Immunization Day know exactly what I’m talking about when I say there’s nothing like it – nothing like knowing you’re being a part of saving lives and making history. And if you can’t be there yourself, then being part of the work through our Foundation is the next best thing.

Why do we have a Foundation? We have a Foundation because our Foundation lifts Rotary up. It lets every club and every district do the most it possibly can. It allows every one of us to be part of all of Rotary’s work, and it brings that work to greater and greater heights.

As we celebrate Rotary Foundation Month, we should all remember that The Rotary Foundation is our Foundation. It’s here for us and because of us; it allows us to do more, to be more, and to bring more hope to the world. The responsibility for keeping our Foundation strong lies with each of us.

RC Basilan conducts VOY Impromptu Speaking Competition

The Rotary Club of Basilan conducted the Voice of our Youth 10^th National Impromptu Competition 2008-2009 last October 17, 2008 at the Twin’s Ice Cream House and Restaurant, Isabela City, Basilan. A total of six (6) contestants from different high schools participated in the club level competition. Voice of our Youth is an impromptu speaking competition open to Filipino high school students, 14 to 18 years old, from public to private schools nationwide. It seeks to develop the students’ ability to form their point of view on a particular topic within a limited preparation time and to effectively convey their message to an audience in plain English. The competition aims to inspire the Filipino youth to attain world-class proficiency in English communication, in furtherance of universal understanding and cooperation.

The winner of this competition will represent the Rotary Club of Basilan to the District Level competition (Semi-final round) to be held in Bacolod City on November 22, 2008.

Winners of the District Level competition will participate in the National Level Competition (Grand Finals) to be held on February 6, 2009, 2:00 p.m., at the Philamlife Auditorium, United Nations Avenue, Ermita, Manila.

The Winner for the 10^th Voice of our Youth Impromptu Speaking Competition Club Level Category is Gadzmin Salisa, a fourth year student of the Basilan National High School (BNHS).

Other contestants to the competition were the following: Mae Ann Tan, 4^th year, BNHS; Shiala Kalbi, 4^th year, BNHS; Abdul Adhiem Manatad, 3^rd year, BNHS; Maila Grace Tura, 3^rd year, Claret College of Isabela (CCI), and Arnie Jude Carido, 4^th year, CCI.

The Basilan National High School (BNHS) Interact Club recently conducted the Mr. and Miss Interact 2008 last October 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the BNHS Gymnasium, Isabela City, Basilan. “This is part of our fund raising campaign to finance the other interact activities”, Mrs Leila Duplin, Interact Adviser, said. Interact Club is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 14-18. There are 247,043 Interactors and 10,741 Interact clubs worldwide, sponsored by 8,464 Rotary clubs.There were a total of 8 contestants – 4 males and 4 females. This year’s winner to the Mr and Miss Interact 2008 are Lovey Jeyn Perez and Kristan Dane Domingono.The other contestants for this year’s pageant were Raiyana Alsree and Kenneth Agunid – 1st Runner-Up, Pershida Hasim and John Philip Eijansantos – 2nd Runner-Up and Ena Coleen Pamaran and Ralyn Manalastas, Jr. – 3rd Runner-Up. The Board of Judges were, President Raymond Lintag, PP Dick Brown and Rtn Susan Yu all of Rotary Club of Basilan. Dr. Isa L. Ibrahim, the School Principal gave a Message on the significance of club membership for students such as the Interact Club, which serves as venue for future leaders of our society.

RC Basilan Celebrates Literacy Day

The Rotary Club of Basilan celebrated Literacy Day and Reducing child Mortality last Sept 16, 2008 by inviting guest speaker in our weekly meeting in the person of Mr. Rheinjohn A. Sampang, a public school teacher and a recipient of the Most Outstanding Secondary School Teacher in Basilan, who spoke on Literacy Education: “A look at the Philippines Educational System”. The Rotarians listened and share ideas on how our literacy contributes to reducing child mortality. This is in connection with RI President D. K. Lee's priority request that all clubs in the world take some action to REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY. President Lee suggested that each club may consider blending the twin concerns together and encourage our clubs to promote the reduction of child mortality through appropriate literacy activities.

Joint Governor's Address for Zones 10 and 11

The Rotary International District 3850, Zone 10 and 11 held its Joint Governor’s Address last August 10, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. at the Lantaka Hotel, Zamboanga City. District Zone 10 is composed of Basilan, Zamboanga City Mother Club, Zamboanga City Central, Zambonaga City North and Zamboanga City East. District Zone 11 is composed of Tawi-Tawi, Ipil Sibugay, Metro Zamboanga and Zamboanga City West.

The Presidents of each club called the meeting to order. Gov Ems gave her Message and the program was highlighted by the induction of new members, the recognition of TRF contributors and the presentation numbers of RCZC Central and the RCZC Mother Club.

Hon. Susan Yu was inducted as new member of RC Basilan with the classification of GS Public Service.

District Governor Emma "Ems" Nava of District 3850 visits the Rotary Club of Basilan last August 5, 2008 as part of her scheduled club visits within the District. Arriving from Zamboanga City at 11:30 a.m. via MV Nichole, she was met by Pres. Ray Lintag and PP Dan Cariaga. Gov Ems together with ADG Edmon Dimaano, ADG Dexter Chang, Pres Ric Coros of RCZC North, and Pres Serge Probadora of RCZC Central proceeded to JJ Twin's Ice Cream House and Restaurant were other members of the club eagerly awaits their arrival. A short discussion between DG Ems, ADG Edmon, Pres Ray and PP Dan on the plans and programs of the club was held. It was followed by a lunch and after which the meeting proper was called to order. DG Ems emphasize in her message the three major thrusts of rotary such as Water, Health and Hunger, and Education. She also discussed about contributing to the TRF and all other information pertaining to the district plans and programs. Before going back to Zamboanga for another club visit in the evening, Gov Ems had a courtesy call to the Mayor of Isabela City, Mayor Cherrylyn Santos Akbar.

The Rotary Club of Basilan held its 49th induction of officers and turn-over ceremonies last July 4, 2008 at the JJ Twin’s Pavillion, Isabela City, Basilan with Assistant District Governor of District 3850 Eduardo “Edmon” Dimaano, a double Paul Harris fellow, as the inducting officer, who gave an inspirational message.

Outgoing RCB President Wilfredo “Wil” Zerna, a Rotary Foundation sustaining member, delivered his valedictory address and the incoming President Raymond “Ray” Lintag also delivered his inaugural address.

The new set of officers for RY 2008-2009 inducted are: Raymond “Ray” Lintag, president; Rtn. William “Bobong” Yu, RFSM vice president; PP Fernando “Dan” Cariaga, secretary; PP Laura “Lau” Alano; treasurer; Danet “Net” Manigos, auditor; PP Danilo “Dan” Bucoy, RFSM special project Committee; Reginaldo “Dodie” Bucoy, RFSM club administration Committee; Rtn. Rustico O. Guerrero, PN (M) GSC, commander of the First Marine Brigade assigned at the island-province of Basilan, finished his military course and bachelor degree at the Philippine Military Academy.
